The Malian delegation, led by the Minister of Environment, Sanitation and Sustainable Development, represents Mali at the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) on biodiversity, currently held in Cali, Colombia. More than 30 African countries have come together to make their voices heard and express their expectations for the Global Framework for Kunming-Montréal biodiversity (CMGBF).
This conference is a crucial step in making operational the mechanism for the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of digital sequencing information on genetic resources, established at COP15. The ongoing negotiations are also aimed at mobilizing additional financial resources for biodiversity protection, ensuring that biodiversity reaches the most critical areas quickly.
At this briefing on the African position for ministers on 28 October, our Minister had the honour to share Mali's experience in biodiversity conservation and exchanged with his African counterparts. The Vice-President of Colombia then welcomed African ministers, sharing her country's history and conservation commitments while listening to the specific expectations and perspectives of African countries.
COP16 highlights the recognition of the invaluable contributions of indigenous peoples and local communities as key custodians of biodiversity.
This inclusive dialogue is essential to ensure that the protection, restoration and sustainable use of biodiversity become a shared reality.
