Launch of several major works in Mopti and structuralists under the Degraded Land Restoration Project (PRTD-Mali)

DOUMBIA Mariam TANGARA, Minister of the Environment, Sanitation and Sustainable Development, launched a number of major and structural projects in Mopti on Thursday 13 February 2025 as part of the Degraded Land Restoration Project (PRTD-Mali). It was in the presence of his colleagues from Transport and Infrastructure, DEMBELE Madina SISSOKO, the Advancement of Women, Children and the Family, DIARRA Djènèba SANOGO, General Abass DEMBELE, Governor of the Mopti Region, members of the Ministerial Cabinets, the National Coordinator of PRTD-Mali, Madou DIALLO, representatives of the technical services of MEADD, the administrative, political and traditional legitimacy authorities of the Malian Venice and a large public.
In their welcoming speeches, the Governor of Mopti, the Mayor, the spokesperson of the district chiefs, welcomed the launch of the enlargement work and the upgrading of the road to Mopti Governorate, the rehabilitation of the pineapple docking ramp and the docking wharf in Mopti, dredging and settling of sediments on the access road to the boat dock and the development of the water channel at the Konna fishing port.
Speaking, the Minister of the Environment, Sanitation and Sustainable Development, DOUMBIA Mariam TANGARA first welcomed the commitment of the highest authorities in our country, in this case His Excellency General Assimi GOITA, President of the Transition, Head of State and President of the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) for initiating, supporting and placing the restoration of degraded land and adaptation to climate change at the heart of national priorities.
The Mopti region, characterized by the filling of the feeding channels and the riverside Niger, the difficulties of navigation and access to production and marketing infrastructures are affected by climate change, land degradation, pastures, water points leading to a reduction in vital spaces, a decrease in agro-sylvo-pastoral and fisheries production and a weakening of terrestrial and river ecosystems.
To reverse this trend and address environmental challenges, the Minister of the Environment, Sanitation and Sustainable Development today launched work at a cost of CFAF 4, 56 billion.
This involves the upgrading and widening of the road to the governorate over a distance of more than 2 km in order to improve traffic and protect the banks and the city from recurrent flooding; the rehabilitation of the ramp and dock to facilitate trade and enhance the safety of the boats; the dredging and curing of the sediments on nearly 3 km of access road to the dock, thus ensuring a better airworthiness and fluidity of port activities; the rehabilitation and development of the water channel at the Konna fishing port for the modernization of fishing in order to improve the quality of fishery products and practices.
The infrastructure, which was launched by Minister DOUMBIA Mariam TANGARA, reflects a political will and a collective ambition to achieve sustainable and inclusive development capable of opening up the city of Mopti, stimulating production and the local economy. They will also create direct and indirect jobs for women and young people, strengthen the livelihoods of fishermen, farmers and traders in terms of production, conservation, processing and marketing of the various products, and drive a new dynamic in the revival of the local economy.
Before concluding his speech, the Minister invited all stakeholders to play their full part in achieving the desired success.
It should be recalled that, after their arrival and in accordance with the instructions of His Excellency the General of the Assimi GOITA Army, President of the Transition, Head of State, the ministerial delegation paid a courtesy visit to the traditional legitimacys, including the village chief and the imam of Mopti.
